ZINNIAS AND pEARLS

Zinnias and Pearls
Beauty Grown. Beauty Refined.
Hello, Beloved…
There are seasons when God teaches us through the smallest things.
A flower opening in the garden.
A pearl tucked quietly inside its shell.
A melody that somehow finds us when we thought the room had gone silent.
Lately, I have been thinking about zinnias and pearls.
They could not be more different, yet somehow they tell the same story.
One grows beneath the warmth of the sun, pushing through ordinary soil until suddenly there is color where there once was only dirt.
The other is formed in a hidden place, created slowly around something that once caused irritation.
One blooms.
One is refined.
And both remind me of becoming.
The Zinnia 🌸
I love zinnias because they do not seem afraid of color.
Pink.
Coral.
Red.
Orange.
Yellow.
Soft petals layered upon petals, each bloom appearing to celebrate the simple fact that it was given another day beneath the sun.
But before the bloom, there was soil.
Before there was color, there was waiting.
Before anyone stopped to admire the flower, there was a seed hidden beneath the earth doing work no one could see.
Beloved, some of the most important work God does in us happens exactly like that.
Hidden.
There are prayers you have prayed that seem buried.
Dreams you have carried that have not yet broken through the surface.
Places in your heart where you wonder whether anything beautiful could possibly grow again.
But buried does not always mean forgotten.
Sometimes buried means planted.
“Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.”
Psalm 92:13 KJV
The seed cannot see the garden while it is beneath the soil.
It simply responds to what it has been given.
Water.
Warmth.
Time.
And eventually, it reaches toward the light.
Maybe that is what faith looks like in some seasons.
Reaching toward the Light before you can see what you are becoming.
The Pearl 🤍
And then there is the pearl.
A pearl does not begin as something beautiful.
It begins with irritation.
Something uncomfortable enters the oyster, and instead of allowing that irritation to destroy it, layer after layer begins to form around it.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Hidden beneath the water.
Until what once caused discomfort becomes surrounded by something precious.
I think there are places in our lives that God touches this way.
The disappointment.
The rejection.
The unanswered prayer.
The chapter we would have rewritten if He had handed us the pen.
We bring those places to Him, sometimes trembling, sometimes questioning, sometimes with nothing more eloquent than tears.
And somehow grace begins covering them.
Layer upon layer.
Prayer upon prayer.
Mercy upon mercy.
Until one day we look back and realize that the place that once hurt to touch has become part of our testimony.
The wound was real.
But so was the grace.
Zinnias and Pearls
Maybe that is why these two belong together in my heart.
Zinnias remind me that God can grow beauty from the ground beneath my feet.
Pearls remind me that God can bring beauty from the places that once caused pain.
One says:
Bloom anyway.
The other whispers:
The pressure did not destroy you.
And Jesus says:
Beloved, I have been here through all of it.
Through every season of planting.
Through every hidden place.
Through every disappointment.
Through every tiny beginning.
Through every beautiful becoming.
“Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.”
Jeremiah 31:3 KJV
Perhaps You Are Still Becoming
Maybe you are reading this from somewhere beneath the soil.
Nothing looks like it is blooming yet.
Or perhaps you are in the pearl season, where something uncomfortable is being transformed slowly, one layer of grace at a time.
Do not despise the hidden season.
There is sacred work happening there.
Roots are growing where no one applauds.
Strength is forming where no one sees.
Your testimony is being written in rooms no audience will ever enter.
And eventually, Beloved, there will be evidence.
A bloom.
A pearl.
A song.
Not because the journey was painless, but because God was faithful inside it.
A Shy Reflection
I am learning that becoming does not always look beautiful while it is happening.
Sometimes becoming looks like dirt beneath your fingernails.
Sometimes it looks like tears on your pillow.
Sometimes it looks like beginning again.
Sometimes it looks like standing in the garden and realizing that something you planted months ago finally decided to bloom.
And sometimes it is discovering that the thing you thought had only wounded you has become a place where God's tenderness shines brightest.
I do not want to rush those moments anymore.
I want to notice them.
The zinnias.
The pearls.
The prayers.
The tiny evidence of grace scattered throughout an ordinary day.
Because perhaps our lives are not simply stories about where we have been.
Perhaps they are gardens where God continually whispers:
Look again, Beloved. Something is blooming.
A Prayer for the Becoming
Father,
Thank You for every seed You have planted in places I cannot yet understand.
Teach me to trust You beneath the soil.
When I cannot see growth, remind me that You are still working.
When life brings irritation, disappointment, or pain, cover those places with Your grace until even my scars become reminders of Your faithfulness.
Give me courage to bloom when You call me forward and patience when You ask me to remain hidden.
Help me recognize Your fingerprints in ordinary beauty, in flowers growing beside me, in pearls formed in secret places, and in the woman You are gently teaching me to become.
May my life carry the fragrance of Your presence.
May my story sing of Your goodness.
And when I forget who I am, whisper again:
Beloved.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Shy Reflection
Some things God grows in the sunlight.
Some things He forms in the deep.
Both can become beautiful in His hands.
Hello, Beloved.
Keep growing.
Keep listening.
Keep following His melody.
Your story is still blooming.
His Voice • His Melody • His Love • Your Becoming
